Yew Gaht Me
Ric Scales is a artist from San Diego California who is half of the Hiphop duo 18scales. Just like a hand full of other San Diego creatives I came across Scales artistry during my time in SD some years ago and i’ve kept a eye on him since. Emerging as a phenomenal lyricist Ric Scales delivers undeniable raps that are ground breaking to me, not only across the country but for the city of San Diego. Recently Ric Scales released a snippet claiming its about time he dropped a project and I couldn’t agree more. The San Diego emcee really became a artist i took notice to when when I heard the duo project from him and producer/emcee 18Sense featuring Chuck M00n titled “Leave It All Behind” which is mostly produced by 18Sense, giving you smooth production mixed with some essence of 90s hiphop vibes while Ric Scales delivering some profound raps that helped pave the way for many SD artist. One of my favorite records from Ric Scales is a record off the project titled “Free Bees 1.8” featuring 18Sense & Chuck M00n called “Yew Gaht Me” where Ric Scales says “No need to wonder who my family is, I can see it in their actions ima ride for you thick & thin”
Over the years Ric Scales has dropped a great deal of work that’s astonishing in their own right with his lyrical abilities, story telling, flow and cadences Ric Scales has proven to be a house wholed name when it comes to West coast artist. The music is timeless “Yew Gaht Me” was released in 2018 and the message still holds weight in 2024, that’s true artistry.
From releasing his own bodies of work including singles, Ric Scales has been featured on countless records from his peers that also hold weight. One feature that stands out to me is from Ray Riley & Ric Scales called “Where You At Boi”. For me each year, with every new project I can see Ric Scales step up his game with each release. 2024 is almost over will we get new Ric Scales in the new future? Stay tuned to find out
