Shanetheshaman
Shanetheshaman made The Creators Room Artist of the week back in August and has been consistent with his artistry I feel it was only right to bring him back to The Creators Room but this time getting to know who he is on a more in depth level. When I heard the record “Ebony & Ivory” I thought dude has some skills, from lyrics, to substance, to storytelling all while bringing that gritty real hip-hop vibe. “I been dealing with God, speaking my truth so the devil can Die” when I heard that line the hair on my arms stood up, Shane The Shaman is definitely pulling his weight. If you don’t know by now lyricism is just the lane my heart resides in when it comes to hip-hop and for along time alot of us felt that it was a dying art but Shane along with a hand full of others is proving that times are changing and getting back to what hip-hop really is. When I posted Shane as artist of the Week I posted his song “For You ( Full Circle)” this one GO it gives me that old common type of vibe and the production on this one is crazy. I feel like this is a record you would hear on a soundtrack to a movie 🎬 .
On the record “Rain” Shane The Shaman spazzed out if I had to put my money on it i’ll bet Shane will be around for a long time, and the fact he has his faith in God and isn’t afraid to incorporate that in his music letting the people know I have the utmost respect for that. “Why Not Me” is another record that stands put to me by Shane go check out his catalog asap if u like real rap.
Shane welcome to The Creators Room i’m very happy to have you here once again. How did u get started making music? Tell us a little bit about how life was growing up?
▪︎ music is something that my cousins and I all did to keep the spirit if my uncle alive. So I’ve been writing since ‘03. Life was fly, man. Big family, not-so big house in East Flatbush.
Where are u from? What inspires you to make music?
▪︎ I’m a New Yorker. Born in Brooklyn, raised in between Brooklyn and Queens, I got a taste of the different flavors that make those boroughs special. That’s what inspires me. The grittiness of Brooklyn and the diversity and palatability of Queens.
How did u come up with the name Shanetheshaman ?
▪︎ Shane, The Shaman came from me renaming my twitter handle. It’s heavily inspired by Avatar, The Last Airbender, Tyler, The Creator and etc. it sounded fly, flows pretty easily when you say it.
Are u looking for a record deal or do u feel u want to remain independent?
▪︎ Thats a good question. I certainly don’t want to go into a label meeting empty handed in the sense that they would have to handle everything for me—that’ll cost me heavily. While I enjoy the freedom of being indie, I know there’s rooms and teams that I’ll flourish the same, if not better in.
How do u feel u stand out from other artist in you're city? What makes you different?
▪︎ I’m not worried about adhering to a box or a certain sound. Even if I venture to other sounds, I still make it “me”—I add my particular brand of herbs and spices.
What was the recording process like when creating "As far as I'm concerned" ?
▪︎ So I wrote that project while I was working the worst job I ever worked. I knew I left a lot to desire from my first EP “I Hear You” and I wanted to make sure I didn’t leave a crumb this time around. Adding in all the personal elements, had more fun in the pockets, diversified the beat selection. I recorded all the demos on my own, then went to SHU studio to lay it properly.
Tell us about a obstacle you have come across during you're musical career and what u did to overcome that hurdle.
▪︎ A recurring hurdle is inspiration—writers block. In addition, life got a way of getting in the way, so you likely won’t have time to get in and record like you feel you should. For one, the only way out of writers block is to keep writing, no matter what it is, word to J. Cole; everyday you get up, write something. Anything. To save time, invest in a home setup and find a DAW you wouldn’t mind learning. Record when you can, record what you have. Get those verses off you and see how they sound. The only way to make it work is to make it work.
Who in the industry do u pull inspiration from? Who would u want to collaborate with ?
▪︎ J. Cole is my favorite rapper. I learn a lot from how he moves. Kendrick for sure. Drake refuses to be put in a box and plans to dominate every aspect, and I love that. Wale is an assassin who pops out every now and again. Tyler, another guy who refuses to be boxed in. The whole Spillage Village camp, Ghetto Sage (Saba, Smino, Noname), Vic Mensa. Vince Staples is lowkey a genius. Those are all people I’d love to work with as well.
What advice would u give a young Shane just getting in the game, knowing what u know now.
▪︎ Keep writing. Keep recording. Do not lose your momentum. Keep that verse from Inception close to your heart. You been great from the beginning.
